You Are Ours | Remo’s Birth | Netcare Christiaan Barnard, Cape Town

I met Lisa for coffee to discuss her birth.  At the time this beautiful mama was deciding on whether she wanted to have a natural birth.  We talked through all the positives and negatives and immediately clicked.

A while later I met Lyndsay, her partner at their complimentary maternity shoot. I loved capturing their maternal journey and enjoyed this young, vibrant and trendy couple’s company tremendously.  We chatted about different business ideas they had and Lyndsay, who is very health consious even convinced me to stop drinking Coca-Cola when I’m stressed out!

In the end Lisa had an incredibly intense but beautiful natural birth and Lyndsay got to help catch their son Remo.  Watch their story and then we can start at the beginning!

I loved everything about Lisa and Lyndsay’s maternity shoot in Newlands Forest – from the luminous light, to the temporary tattoos Lisa decorated her baby bump with.

The Eskimo Pixie

Far, far away, where the land is white with snow.  Slept a little pixie with dark, dark hair – a little baby Eskimo!

I tend to do more lifestyle or photojournalistic work as I think they have a raw, emotional quality which styled photography does not have.  But I certainly believe styled newborn work has earned its popular spot in the world of photography with masters like Anne Geddes taking the lead.  There’s just something about a sleeping baby, propped up in a sweet way that makes us all go ga-ga.

For my styled newborn work I try to move away from cookie-cutter looks and over-the-top props.  Instead I opt for natural, hand-made materials, subtle colours and a minimalism.  I also like to create a sense of magical wonder with my images and love thinking up little stories around images like this on of the little Eskimo Pixie.

Fearfully-Made

I’ve been wanting to do a bird’s nest newborn shoot for a while now. However, I could not find a suitable ‘nest’.  I wanted something different to the typical ‘studio prop’ shoot – something more organic and natural. Something special. So I decided to make my own nest.  Today I got to try it out and I couldn’t have picked a more perfect subject for it (a little boy called Hendrik).

Newborn Photography | Fynbos Fairy

Grown in Cape Town – that is the beautiful fynbos fairy from today’s newborn shoot and the protea she’s clutching!  I’m proudly South African, as well as Capetonian so styling this session was right up my alley.  I prefer natural light on a newborn’s skin which is probably why I tend to do more on location work than studio work (but I do studio work from time to time).  I like to keep my styling as natural and simple as possible and love working with textures.

I can’t write this blog without mentioning the family dog who decided to join the family for this session. What a sweetheart!  Here’s to not forgetting our four-legged friends in the euphoria of bringing home a new baby!  And here’s to Cape Town, protea’s and this beautiful fynbos fairy!

Natural Water Birth | At Home: Meeting Beth

I was not yet on standby for Michele and Raymond Kroger and on my way to a kids birthday party with my own little munchkins, when the call came through from Lana, the doula – Michi was in labour.  Thinking I could steal a couple of moments with the camera at the birthday party, I had my camera bag in the back of the car (but not my ‘birth photography bag’ – which I will do a separate blog on).  This is the story of Meeting Beth on that rainy Saturday afternoon as told by Raymond (original source Your Pregnancy Feb/March 2014, photography Love Alda Maternal & Family Photography).

All images and content shared with parents’ permission and family friendly.
