Danica-maternity-by-love-alda-3

I met Danica and Ryno a year ago for their winter maternity shoot.  We had so much fun despite Danica initially only doing the maternity shoot because Ryno wanted one! From the get-go I knew that their little Dawid was going to be only lucky and happy baby. Shortly after I capture the birth of their beautiful baby boy at Mediclinic Paarl.  Even though Danica lives in Hermanus we have been friends ever since.Cape-Town-Birth-Photographer-Love-Alda-Dawid-Birth-AnnouncementShortly after Dawid’s birth, Danica, who is an esteemed wedding planner, launched Jan Pierewiet.  It didn’t take long for myself and Danica to find synergies between our brands and our shared needs as mothers.  We collaborated to bring mothers the ultimate luxury designer baby bag!

Happy Birthday Beth!

Beth was born at home on the 31st of August.  It was a much colder and rainier day than today, but inside the house was warm as the steam from the hot water in the birth pool mixed with the scent of the aroma oils midwife Marianne was using on Michi as she laboured bravely.

Today Beth turns one.  I will never forget the moment her parents met her and I will forever be grateful to them for allowing me to share some of their memories from that incredibly precious event.  Happy, happy birthday little Beth.  My your life be blessed and filled with love and happiness.

Your Nursery Featured in a Magazine!

I still remember getting my first nursery ready – the time, love and care that went into it and sometimes just spending some quiet time in it – waiting with anticipation!  I also remember feeling very sad when my 3 year old son told me he was too big for his baby room and wanted something with bugs.  My heart literally sank as I covered the beautiful cream and pastels with a forest green.  In hindsight I wish I had taken more photo’s of that first nursery – it was beautiful.

I’m therefore offering my Love Alda clients and fans the opportunity to get their nursery photographed and featured in BIRTH.  Memre van Heerden’s nursery is in the autumn / winter 2014 edition and if you think your nursery will make others weak at the knees I encourage you to follow BIRTH for tips and ideas and contact me at [email protected]

A FREE mini nursery shoot (to be included in your final birth story) is now also offered to all my new birth photography clients!

The Eskimo Pixie

Far, far away, where the land is white with snow.  Slept a little pixie with dark, dark hair – a little baby Eskimo!

I tend to do more lifestyle or photojournalistic work as I think they have a raw, emotional quality which styled photography does not have.  But I certainly believe styled newborn work has earned its popular spot in the world of photography with masters like Anne Geddes taking the lead.  There’s just something about a sleeping baby, propped up in a sweet way that makes us all go ga-ga.

For my styled newborn work I try to move away from cookie-cutter looks and over-the-top props.  Instead I opt for natural, hand-made materials, subtle colours and a minimalism.  I also like to create a sense of magical wonder with my images and love thinking up little stories around images like this on of the little Eskimo Pixie.

Studio Newborn Photography – What to expect

Princess-small

I love natural light and minimal styling when it comes to newborn photography, but that is not to say that I do not do styled, studio work.  In fact, I would not be true to my own ‘inner princess’ if I didn’t admit that doing a styled, studio shoot like this one every so often is LOADS of fun! Playing ‘dress-up’ is however hard work – so here’s some pointers as to what to expect at and prepare for your newborn session (whether on location or in studio):

Celebrate a new life with me!

Baby-bunnies

The habit to celebrate the birth of a child started years ago in Dublin, Ireland when one rainy day my friend mentioned that their friend’s baby girl had just been born.  My own children were still a wish upon a star, but the idea of this new life starting and recognising the moment it all began for her (even though I did not know her or her parents) filled me with a feeling of hope and joy.

Fearfully-Made

I’ve been wanting to do a bird’s nest newborn shoot for a while now. However, I could not find a suitable ‘nest’.  I wanted something different to the typical ‘studio prop’ shoot – something more organic and natural. Something special. So I decided to make my own nest.  Today I got to try it out and I couldn’t have picked a more perfect subject for it (a little boy called Hendrik).
