The birth of Rohan & Carmen Kitshoff’s son was beautiful.
Love takes on many forms: a supporting, loving husband trying to absorb his wife’s pain, a mother braving her fears, a family waiting in anticipation for a first-born. Love is tears of joy – an instant recognition between parent and child. Love is a celebration of life. It touches everyone in close proximity to it.
Malan your birth is a testimony to the love between your parents, as well as the love they share for you. May you grow up to recognise it, feel it and to pass it on to others.
Carmen tackled her surges with so much dignity and courage and Rohan’s dedication to his wife and the labour journey is evident. There were moments where it looked like he was trying to absorb Carmen’s pain. How wonderful that Malan will one day be able to see the love surrounding his birth.
Malan was born at 8:28am weighing 3.58kg!
How proud can a father and grandfather be? Carmen’s dad’s reaction to her with little Malan on her chest was priceless. Her mom was still making her way to Cape Town in seriously stormy weather but she was there in spirit (on all the photos where Carmen and Rohan have cell phones they are talking to or texting her).
Skin to skin contact with fathers directly after birth can help stabilise a newborn and allows for bonding. It is evident how much both Rohan and Malan enjoyed these first precious moments of contact together.
Thank you Carmen and Rohan for allowing me to share your beautiful love story and your commitment to each other and parenthood. I wish you much love and joy as a family.
