Far, far away, where the land is white with snow. Slept a little pixie with dark, dark hair – a little baby Eskimo!
I tend to do more lifestyle or photojournalistic work as I think they have a raw, emotional quality which styled photography does not have. But I certainly believe styled newborn work has earned its popular spot in the world of photography with masters like Anne Geddes taking the lead. There’s just something about a sleeping baby, propped up in a sweet way that makes us all go ga-ga.
For my styled newborn work I try to move away from cookie-cutter looks and over-the-top props. Instead I opt for natural, hand-made materials, subtle colours and a minimalism. I also like to create a sense of magical wonder with my images and love thinking up little stories around images like this on of the little Eskimo Pixie.
I should add that styled newborn work is really, really hard work and images like these don’t just ‘happen’. It requires a lot of patience from mom and myself. The client also needs to trust the process and the photographer (all babies will eventually fall asleep!)
It’s not an exact science – it’s a form of art and when it’s good it’s magical!
